Ozempic

Type 2 Diabetes Medication

What Is Ozempic (Semaglutide)?

Ozempic (Semaglutide), also known as Wegovy in other countries, is a new medication, which was approved for use in Australia in June 2020. In recent clinical trials, it produced promising weight loss results of 8-18% total weight loss, which is approximately 15-25% excess weight loss at one year.

Ozempic is approved for prescription in Australia for the management of Type 2 Diabetes. While is currently shows very encouraging results, it is not specifically approved for use in weight loss.

Diabetes & Weight Loss Management

The research literature supports the use of Ozempic in patients with type 2 diabetes and appears to be an effective method of managing their diagnosis, in conjunction to helping them lose weight. Ozempic can also be used in conjunction with other diabetes medication, making it an effective treatment for a wide range of patients.

How Often Do You Take Ozempic?

Ozempic is a once-a-week injectable medication and works by helping the body to better control blood sugar levels. Ozempic comes in a pre-filled self injecting pen unit that is easy and painless to administer. The usual starting dose is 0.25 delivered once weekly.

Dose adjustment is usually made based on how well the medication is working and any side effects you may be experiencing.

Potential Side Effects Of Ozempic

Mild side effects that are typically associated with Ozempic use include:

  • Constipation
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Stomach Pain
  • Vomiting

How Does Ozempic Work?

Ozempic is an injectable GLP-1 analogue medication already used in the treatment for Type 2 Diabetes and is similar to weight loss medication, Saxenda (Liraglutide). GLP-1 is a gut hormone released form the small bowel when we eat food. Its role is to slow down the stomach and gut emptying, reduce appetite, and improve the action of insulin in reducing blood sugar.

Ozempic works by mimicking the action of GLP-1, thereby inducing satiety, and promoting weight loss.
